Powder coating is a process in which, without using solvents and thinners, a coating is applied to products.
Powder coating characteristics
Powder coating is usually done with a 2-component coating that has already been mixed in the right composition at the factory. This allows the excellent properties of powder coating to be guaranteed. By mixing the powder coating with air, it can be sprayed perfectly. By electrostatically charging the powder coating cloud and properly grounding the products to be sprayed, an even layer thickness can be applied.
By subsequently heating the product, the powder coating melts and a smooth layer is obtained. At a temperature of approximately 160 ° -200 ° C, the coating starts to react and the desired properties are achieved. After cooling, the product is immediately suitable for further assembly or commissioning.
Environmentally aware
Partly because of the recyclability of spray mist and the absence of solvents and thinners, powder coating is seen as a ‘green’, sustainable surface treatment. In addition, powder coating has a long life expectancy of generally more than 30 years.
Different powder coatings
Various types of powders can be applied to powder coating, depending on the requirements that are set. The most used are:
Epoxy: indoor application or as a primer in a multi-layer system; excellent corrosion resistance and chemical resistance
Epoxy polyester: indoor application; good flow and various effect coatings possible
Polyester – Qualicoat 1: outside resistant
Modified polyester – Qualicoat 2: outer resistant, super durable (better color and gloss retention)
In addition, powder coatings are extremely suitable for effect coatings. Various fine and coarse structures, metallics and wrinkle effect are easily achievable. Extensive experience has also been gained with special effects such as anodised look, Corten steel effect and various metal imitations.
